(You don’t have to relive the past to heal from it.)

Trauma Therapy in Alpharetta & Throughout Georgia

You’re functioning

but inside, something still feels off

You’ve done a lot of work. You’ve told your story. Maybe you’ve even convinced yourself it’s in the past. But your body still doesn’t feel settled. You’re easily triggered, emotionally distant, quick to shut down, or living in a constant state of hyper-alertness.

That’s what unresolved trauma can feel like:

Your system doing everything it can to protect you, long after the threat has passed.

At Origins Holistic Psychotherapy, we offer trauma therapy that helps you reconnect with your body, regulate your nervous system, and gently process what your system has been holding. We use EMDR, Brainspotting, Trauma Incident Reduction (TIR), somatic therapy, mindfulness, and self-compassion to support the full spectrum of trauma healing.

Trauma therapy helping individual cope with difficulties.

What is trauma?

Trauma isn’t defined only by what happened to you. It’s defined by how your system responded when it didn’t feel safe, supported, or in control.

Trauma can stem from:

✔ A single event like an accident, loss, surgery, or assault

✔ Chronic emotional neglect, abandonment, or abuse

✔ Ongoing stress from toxic environments, identity-based oppression, or instability

✔ Developmental trauma from childhood that shaped how you see yourself and others

✔ Medical trauma or experiences that left your body feeling unsafe

When the brain perceives something as a threat, the nervous system activates a survival response commonly known as fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. This is your body’s way of protecting you. In an ideal world, your system would resolve that threat and return to regulation. But when there’s no time, space, or safety to process what happened, your nervous system gets stuck in defense mode.

Trauma & the Nervous System:

A Polyvagal Lens

Polyvagal Theory helps us understand how trauma affects the body and mind. Your vagus nerve is a key player in regulating your sense of safety and connection. When trauma occurs, your body may shift into:

  • Sympathetic activation (Fight or Flight): racing heart, anxiety, restlessness, irritability, panic

  • Dorsal vagal shutdown (Freeze): numbness, disconnection, depression, exhaustion, fogginess

  • Fawn (appease): people-pleasing, over-accommodating, abandoning your own needs to avoid conflict

These states are not flaws, rather they are brilliant survival responses. But they aren’t meant to be permanent. Trauma therapy helps your body learn it’s safe to come out of those states and return to connection, regulation, and trust.

Holistic Therapy in Alpharetta, Georgia | Feelings after trauma relief tools are used.

Trauma shows up in so many forms—and often long after the original event.

You might notice:

✔ Emotional numbness or overreaction

✔ Chronic fatigue or muscle tension

✔ Flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, or difficulty focusing

✔ Shame, guilt, or self-blame that’s hard to explain

✔ Difficulty trusting others or letting people in

✔ Feeling disconnected from your body, your purpose, or your joy

✔ Panic, social withdrawal, or avoidance of certain places or people

If any of this feels familiar, your body might be carrying something it didn’t have the support to release.

You’re not too much. You’re not broken. You’re responding exactly as a wise system would.

At Origins Holistic Psychotherapy in Alpharetta, Georgia, we don’t aim to “fix” you. We work with you to create more balance, more breath, and more space between the triggers and your reaction.
